PDRC "Arena Event" at Kirkton Manor, Peebles, Sunday 1st August 2010

This was our fist attempt at an "Arena Event" in the general style of the BE "Express Eventing" held in November 2008 at Cardiff's Millenium Stadium.
The emphasis for the day was on ‘fun’ and the feedback was that it was a good day - so although a lot or effort in setting up and organising, it was all worth it.

Thanks go to the Irvines for allowing the use of Kirkton Manor, to our class sponsors; Lyne Farm B&B, Remax Biggar and Clyde Vet Group, to our judges and of course to everyone who helped!

Full results are now available, and photographs are available from Hoofprints Photography.

April Showjumping at Hyndshawland, 25th April 2010

Sunday 25th April saw PDRC’s first SJ competition of the year at Hyndshawland Farm Stables, with Saltire series qualifying classes from 65cm – 1.05m. Despite the early morning rain the event was well attended, and we were rewarded with some sunny spells in the afternoon!

There were eight competitors in the nursery novice (65cms) class, with six posting clears in the first round. Liz Fletcher and Dusk topped the class with a clear jump-off in 29.13seconds, with Alison Bogue and Westenwind coming in second in 29.8seconds.

The novice (75cms) class had ten competitors, with Lorna Pate and Willow winning on a double clear in 28.31seconds. Second and third places were hotly contested, with Liz Fletcher and Dusk jumping double clear in 29.44seconds to Shona Tennant and Maddy ‘s 29.47seconds.

A field of twelve contested the intermediate (85cms) class with seven posting clears in the first round. Lyn Cameron and Monsoon were the eventual winners with a clear jump-off in 25.25seconds – the fasted double clear of the day. Second place went to Lyn Barr and Tigger in 26.16seconds, and third to June Myers and Zena in 26.78seconds.

With eleven competitors in the small open (95cms) the competition was still going strong. Four came through the first round clear, with three of these adding clear jump-offs to their score. Christine Gray and Ettrick Diva jumped a superb double clear in 29.32seconds to win the class, with Alison Bogue and Brave Broncho second on 32.09seconds, and June Myers and Zena third on 35.31seconds.

The final class of the day (open 1.05m) had four competitors with Anne Paxton and Finnisk Warrior jumping the only clear to win the class. Arran Waddell and Executive Lyne, and Christine Gray with Ettrick Diva were both on 4faults and jumped off for second and third. Christine Gray posted a lovely clear round the jump off track to finish second, with Arran having an unlucky pole down for eventual third.

Many thanks go out to those members (Jennifer Caird, Gail Cormack, Gail Grant, Louise Leaney, Iain Ronaldson, Lyn Miller, Lyn Barr and Maria Little) who gave up their valuable time to help make the day run smoothly. We cannot run events without volunteers and your help is very much appreciated. Thanks also to Dot Still for the use of the facilities at Hyndshawland.

PDRC "Fun" TREC competition at Hyndshawland, 18th April 2010

Wow, what a variety of horses and ponies took part in the Trec competition at Hyndshawlands.  We had hairy, but beautiful ponies through to strapping big 17 hand horses.  The age group of the riders also must have had a span of  40 years.
This was a competition where partnership, trust and skill are all important.
Well done to everyone for taking part. Thanks to Dot and Mike Still for allowing us to use their facility and for all the help Dot gave setting up and getting me started with the very complicated scoring system.  Also thanks to Elspeth Gardner, my only volunteer helper.
Dot will be running training and Trec competitions through the summer so come on out and have a go, your horse will love it.  Sandra

Peebles & District Riding Club Annual Spring Ball (yes, I know this doesn't really belong here!)

Peebles and District Riding Club hosted their 3rd Annual Spring Ball in Biggar, South Lanarkshire, on Saturday 13th March. To add a bit of fun to the proceedings the night was promoted as a Mad Hatters' Ball, with a prize going to the most original Hat! The champagne prize was hard fought but Kathryn Muir emerged triumphant with her “Spring Bonnet” which was covered in springs (of a metal nature) as well as lambs (the soft toy kind)!

The Ball is held each year not only as a highlight of the Club's social events but also as a fund raiser to help finance sending teams down south to compete. We could not manage this without the generosity of Scottish & Northern Equestrian, who donated a year's subscription of their magazine as a raffle prize (Danielle Crawford was the lucky winner) and also the many trainers and livery yards who donated lessons, use of their schools, spa days etc and the local businesses and indeed club members who handed in raffle prizes. A VERY big thank you to you all.

A wonderful time was had by all on the night; firstly with music from the wonderful Clydesdale Ceilidh Band, and then a disco provided by Chris Cruise. There were many many sore feet at the end of the night and probably a few sore heads in the morning!

Roll on next year!

PDRC Dressage at Whitfield Farm on Sunday 21st February 2010

For a change the weather was glorious - quite cold and frosty but with sunshine most of the day, and with no wind it was actually quite pleasant. Despite the cold conditions the arena was quite rideable, and the vast majority of entries turned up on the day. A summary of results is available, and look on the Gallery page for a few photos. Many thanks to all the helpers and to Ginny Laing (again!) and Joy Maclean for judging.

PDRC Dressage at Whifield Farm Livery on Sunday 29th November 2009

Despite pretty awful weather conditions the club's first competition at the new Whitfield Farm Livery yard went ahead on Sunday the 29th of November, with the majority of entered competitors braving the elements to make it a memorable day. Many thanks to the helpers and to our Judges, Ginny Laing and Lynn Taurah.

PDRC Show Jumping, at Hyndshawland Farm, on Sunday 18th October 2009

Our first jumping competition of the winter got off to a slow start. The clear round and 60cm class had only three competitors, the 70cm class had just four.

However, from then on the competition started to arrive. 10 horses competed in the 80 cm class with four going clear and five having four faults in the first round. This meant that the four-faulters had to jump off for fifth and sixth place.

The eventual winners with a fast double clear were Karen Barrett on Georgie Girl. Just behind them in 2nd position was Alison Bogue on her new horse Brave Bronco. New member June Myres on Xena had an unfortunate pole down to finish in 3rd.

Our 90cm class also had 10 combinations jumping. Six went forward to the jump off against the clock, there were several places on the course where time could be saved by taking tight balanced corners.

Arran Waddell on Executive Lyne appeared to fly round the jump off, finishing in a time of 19.57. Others in the class posting a double clear were Linda McIvor riding Junior - she did a lovely clear in 22.72 – and Rebecca Grant on Lancer in 22 seconds. With all still to play for Courtney Williamson somehow managed to shave her lines and finished in an unbelievable 18.36.

Jumps now sitting at one metre high and some of the spreads looking just as wide, 5 brave riders competed.

Rebecca, Arran and Courtney all jumped clear in the first round. In the jump off, Rebecca's horse Lancer unfortunatly rolled a pole, leaving the competition wide open for Arran and Courtney to battle it out again. Arran lost her steering a bit on Batty but jumped clear in 21.06, but once again Courtney, who seemed in top form, galloped round in 18.63.

It was a fantastic day and it was great to see competitors old and new having a good time.

Thanks to John Currie and Peter Lamb for coming to help Jan and Sandra build the course.

Peebles & District Summer Show - 2nd August 2009

The Annual show took place at Manor Farm, Peebles by kind permission of Graham Irvine on Sunday 2nd August 2009.  The show field was very picturesque with a great backdrop of the Manor valley and the weather, although slightly blowy to start, was ideal - with the sun coming out in the afternoon.

The show was relatively well attended by PDRC club members, with some visiting club members from EDRC & EFRA who are always welcomed.  The usual classes - Ridden hunter, Working hunter classes including an Anivac Balir qualifier, Riding Club horse/pony, Ridden horse, Coloured horse/pony and Manners and turnout as well as a new addition of Handy horse/pony were offered, with good entries in them all.

Thanks must go to Graham Irvine, our judges: Lynn Colthard, Ellie de Vries and Carolyn MacDonald, as well as all the helpers who assisted with set up and on the day.

A writeup and list of results is available. Photographs again courtesy of Equine Photographic.

May 2009 Dressage Show

Our annual dressage show on grass attracted many entries from a wide selection of riding and pony clubs. A beautiful day in a glorious setting at Kirkettle Farm Livery, near Rosewell - by kind permission of Mr & Mrs Fairlie - was enjoyed by all. The walk/trot introductory test B was hotly contested with the eventual winner Cheryl Robertson & Shameless winning the class with 71.7%. It was lovely to see so many new combinations and competitors out having their first dressage competition. The restricted Prelim class had a clear winner with Morag Barrell & Whats the Chances leading the field by 18 marks. The open Prelim 13 class had a close result with Susan Terris Weir & Howick SoSo  gaining 1st place by one point over Caroline McIntosh with Proud Image. The restricted  Novice 25 class was won by Lyn Miller and Jack. The SNE Riding Club Qualifiers were also closely contested, with Kirsten McPhillips on Pure Genius IV and Beatrix Wissman on Watson being 1st & 2nd in the Prelim 18 class respectively.  The girls then reversed their placings for the Novice 25 qualifier with Beatrix winning the class with the highest score of the day on 80.8% over Kirsten’s 79.2%! Good luck to them both for the SNE RC Championships at SNEC this October. Kirsten then finished her already successful day with their first ever Elementary test. Despite being the only rider to compete, she did so in style with a score 77.8%.

Very many thanks to our judges, Ginny Laing, Richard Begbie and Fiona Flynn for all their hard work on such a lovely, sunny day. A big thank you also to all our helpers, without whom it would not have been possible to run this show.

April 2009 Show Jumping

The weather was kind for a change and we had a decent field for the April Show Jumping competition at Hyndshawlands.

March 2009 show (Winter Dressage Series and Show Jumping)

Finally, after 2 cancellations of our Winter Dressage Series, the March event went ahead on a relatively fine day. We had decided to incorporate some Show Jumping Classes into the usual Dressage series but hard ground and heavy snow meant that our January and February dates could not go ahead.

The March event provided a great opportunity for all riding club members to “dip their toes” for the season ahead. With 5 dressage classes ranging from Restricted Prelim 10 to an Elementary Class and 4 Show Jumping heights, a variety of members were catered for and the classes were well attended.

The day started with P10 class (restricted) which gave some relatively new PDRC members the chance to show off their horses and all got a rosette. Congratulations to Helen MacNeil and Rock Sand who won the P10 Open and came 2nd in the N26 Open. Also a big well done to Joan Campbell on Daylight (Daisy to her friends) who has finally bitten the bullet at 70+ and started to compete on this new horse, they performed beautifully and won the N26 Restricted class. There was also a great performance from Sarah Brown and Just My Style who won both the N26 Open and the Elementary 41 classes.

A special mention must go to the pair of Haflingers who kept us all entertained with their singing (you know who you are) and Fresco who managed a solo – or was he a backing singer?!

All classes were Saltire Series Qualifiers, including the Show Jumping, which began with a victory for Fresco and Louise Leaney at 65cms. A late entry form Hayley Barr and Tigger secured 1st place at 75cms. Liz Fletcher and Annie took the red rosette at 85 cms with Caroline Fox coming 2nd. Caroline and Montana V then swapped 1st place with Liz in the 95 cms round with Liz coming in 2nd.

Thank you to everyone who helped, to our Judge Mary Hope and host Mrs Dot Still.
