Area team events take place annually in: Hunter Trials, Horse Trials, Show jumping and Dressage. All of these can be performed from novice/prelim, intermediate/novice to open/elementary/medium level. Additionally there are also team events in Style jumping and Riding Test (both of these are judged on style of horse & rider), Dressage to music and pairs dressage. Any of these events can be entered individually or as a team event (teams normally consisting of 4 riders). The eligibility of horses and riders and also the heights, speeds, distances and course requirements for each of these events is stipulated as per BRC rules and are available from the Team Co-ordinators.

Additionally we compete in Inter-club or local team events if an interest is expressed by members.

All team entries are submitted by the team co-ordinators and any issues with any chosen teams should be referred to the team co-ordinators straight away who shall consider all points and have the final say.

NOTE: All horses that are considered for teams must have up to date and Jockey Club Compliant Flu vaccinations.

To be considered in a team or individually at any of these events please email the team co-ordinator.

Area 1 - Qualifier Dates 2010

Horse & rider eligibility is as per the linked document.  To be considered for a team, or individually, for any of these events please email the team co-ordinator.

Unfortunately our Team Calender has fallen foul of the weather yet again with the Area 1 Hunter Trials at Titwood having to be cancelled at the last minute due to the heavy rain. Many thanks to the team members who put themselves forward and also to the volunteers who offered to travel down and act as helpers on the day - We are required to provide helpers at all events where we are sending teams in order for our team to run and this offer of help is greatly appreciated!

Area1 Winter Novice Team dressage - November 2009

Report from Sarah Brown:
On Sunday 15th November Peebles sent a team of 3 westwards to the Area 1 winter novice team dressage at Sandyflats RDA centre in Glasgow. One team member was riding the RC horse trials intermediate test (H12) and the other two team members were riding BD Novice 25. Due to space limitations at the venue there were no warm up tests this time so everyone was going in ‘cold’.
I was drafted in as a rider substitution riding my own Crugybar Euros (Taffie) who I have ridden a handful of times since he went on loan 3 years ago. To say I was slightly apprehensive was an understatement! Due to over-estimating the journey time we arrived while everything was still being set up to an uncharacteristically dry and bright west coast morning. Taff was on his toes in the warm up but eventually relaxed and started to produce some nice work. Once in the ring however he decided to help mum out and grow as much as possible to emulate the 16hh I was used to riding! We managed to produce a sweet enough test, if a little less relaxed than I would have liked, and I was delighted to come out with 68.3% and 4th in our arena, with the winner on 69.4%.
Wendy McTeir was the next team rider in, riding her lovely mare Kind of Confusion (Aria). Aria took a slight dislike to one side of the arena, which was rather wet and slippy, but Wendy rode beautifully and came out with a respectable 54.8%. The final team rider was Jayne Donaldson riding the lovely coloured Fostertons Magic Touch. After convincing her horse that the judges box was not going to eat him, Jayne rode a very accurate test for a score of 59.6%.
No team placings this time unfortunately but everyone had a good day and it stayed dry! The winning team on the day was EFRA with all four riders posting scores in the high 60’s – low 70’s.
Many thanks to the organisers for running possibly the first dressage competition I have attended where the arenas ran ahead of time, and to Sandra for co-ordinating the team. I look forward to seeing a lot more members at future team events, its good fun and everyone is very supportive, so come and give it a go!

Open Show Jumping Championships

Report from Annemarie van Heelsum:
We almost had a unique occasion in that the full team that had qualified for a championship would actually be travelling, but a few weeks before the Lincoln event the bad news came through that Melanie Grant's horse had a foot abcess and would not be fit in time to go. Unable to find a replacement at short notice, the remaining three (Arran Waddell, Wendy McTeir and Annemarie van Heelsum) decided to go regardless. Then transport arrangements fell through as well, but in the end all three horses were loaded in Barry's lorry and Arran's car was stuffed to the brim with all the gear a team caould need for a two-night stay at Lincoln show ground.
Our initial joy that we had been allocated stables in the permanent stable block faded swifly when it transpired these stables were actually the ones that were the very furthest away from where we were camped; meaning a real fitness test dragging hay and straw bales, horse feed and saddles to the horses. The inital impression of the course was positive though, although that may have had something to do with Arran & Wendy walking the course in the dark. Not as big as the qualifier, although more technical, but also very long. We were full of optimism for the trial to come!
Wendy was first to go and came back disappointed with 3 jumps down. However, this was a pretty good achievement for a championship course like this, and certainly for a rider who probably should have been in bed clutching a glass of Lemsip! Next to go was Annemarie, but Lennard (by far the most experienced horse in the team) had decided he was not going to make the effort today and slammed on the brakes when presented at the wrong stride for a pretty innocuous upright. Sensing his rider's displeasure he tensed up and sent several more poles flying. Arran's horse showed his relative inexperience and gave Arran a very difficult ride. Although a very stylish jumper he easily becomes flat resulting in knock-downs. So after the first round we were all left disappointed, and even more resolved to improve in the next round.
The jumps hadn't gone up much so we were confident that surely the only way was up! Alas, it was not to be. Wendy repeated her score of the first round and ended up best of the team. Annemarie had a dreadful round with no less than two stops and hence a complete cricket score. Arran was escorted into the ring by a police horse again, and was the only one who improved on her first round with one knock-down less. Her second round was certainly more flowing and Arran had something to be pleased about. So at least the whole team did get round and was placed (albeit last), which is an achievement in itself. We all went home having learnt something. And because we all felt that we could have done much better, next year we will just have to try again!

BRC Horse Trials Championships

Well done to the Novice Horse Trials Team consisting of Susan Terris Weir, Liz Fletcher, Laurie McGowan and Kirsten McPhillips, who went south to the Horse Trials Championships at Aston le Walls, Warwickshire, on Friday 7th August to take part in the 2 day event on 8th & 9th August.  Everyone did extremely well, with Terri 9th indiv and Kirsten 5th indiv and a good time was had by them all.

Area Novice & Open Dressage - 19th July 2009 at Greenfields of Avondale

Report from Pippa Bowyer:
Sunday the 19th July saw Pippa Bowyer, Helen MacNeil, Annemarie Van Heelsum and Jayne Donaldson all turning out for the Area 1 Team Dressage competition at Greenfields. The weather threatened to turn the day into a wash-out, but the wind kept the worst of the rain away and poor Annemarie got the worst drenching while getting ready for her elementary to music! It seems that Lennard didn't mind the rain though as he won that class in style (qualifying for Lincoln)... as well as winning the medium warm-up class!   Jayne also did brilliantly in her individual warm up tests, coming fifth in the novice and third in the elementary.

Helen and I only did the team tests as the "warm-up" tests couldn't really be described as such - given that they were generally around 4 hours before the team ones! Helen and I decided that both Humphry and Rocky would have thought they were finished for the day after that long a break. So I decided to just go for it and do plenty of warm-up instead. Humphry had had a shoulder injury and so had done negligible schooling for the couple of months in the run-up to the competition but he was a complete star and put his best foot forward on the day considering his fitness. The whole team did good solid tests with Humph getting 64% and coming 6th in his arena; Rocky and Helen getting 65.36% and coming 9th in their arena; Annemarie getting 63.5% and coming 8th in her arena and Jayne getting 59.62% and coming 8th in her arena also.

As a team we therefore didn't disgrace ourselves at all and came fifth overall.  EFRA won as expected, with three first placings, and so once again have set the benchmark of what we need to aim for next time! A great day was had by all though and speaking on my own behalf I can say that it was great fun being part of a team again... it really does make the whole day a bit more exciting when you have others to support as well!

Thanks to Sandra for pulling us all together and to Helen for volunteering to wash all the numnahs! Here's to moving up the placings at the next one!

Area Horse Trials - 5th July 2009 at Greenfields of Avondale

On Sunday 5th July 2009 two novice teams and one intermediate individual headed west just past Strathaven to Greenfields of Avondale for the Area 1 RC Horse Trials which was also a qualifier for the British Riding Club Championships.

It was a nice sunny day with a slight breeze, ideal for keeping the flies away!  The novice ‘A’ team (Susan Terris-Weir, Liz Fletcher, Sarah Brown & Kirsten McPhillips) was first to take to the dressage ring with the ‘B’ team (Justin MacNeil, Lyn Miller, Karen Barratt & Danielle Crawford) following on behind.

The show jumping was slightly delayed giving some of us the valuable extra time to go through the twisty course over the undulating ground that was before us.  The A team produced 3 clear rounds from Susan, Liz & Sarah and one 8 fault round and the ‘B‘ team had two 4 faults and two 8 fault rounds.

The late start of the show jumping unfortunately had a knock on effect to the cross country delaying it by approx 30 mins. The poor steward on the xc warm up had a hard task keeping all the competitors in order!  At this point however some good news about dressage scores was filtering through with some great scores in the 20’s from Susan Terris Weir, Kirsten McPhIllips & Karen Barratt!

The Cross country was a long way round but not too testing in comparison to last year.  Susan, Kirsten & Liz came back clear in the ‘A’ team with Lyn, Karen & Danielle clear in the ‘B’ team.  Justin was doing great in his cross country until he lost his stirrup 3 from home, holding on for dear life he unfortunately lost his balance at the last and fell victim to the Vegetable box. Justin demonstrated great determination and this time last year would not have contemplated competing at this type of event so well done to him for giving it a go!

After a long wait the results were ready with Peebles & District ‘A’ team winning the Novice class on a team score of 101 and qualifying for the Championships in Leamington Spa in August, just ahead of the 2nd place Peebles & District ‘B’ team.  We were the only 2 teams in the novice section on the day to come home with 3 clear xc rounds in each team so there was some good riding from all involved.

Individually Susan Terris Weir & Howick So so were placed 1st finishing on a fantastic score of 29.0, Kirsten McPhIlips & Pure Genius IV were 2nd on a score of 34.4 and Liz Fletcher & Annie 3rd on 37.6.  Kirsten also received the prize for best dressage in the class with a great score of 26.4 from a test that she had  thought was “average”!

Wendy McTeir and Kind of Confusion was the sole Intermediate competitor representing PDRC.   Wendy normally show jumps so this was a slightly new event for her to tackle.   There was a worry for her though just before the show jumping with Aria demonstrating a slight lameness due to a shoe deciding to move, however a farrier was on site and it was soon fixed to enable her to have 1 down sj but clear xc ending up 7th.

Well done to everyone involved and thank you to our competitors helpers Helen MacNeil and Louise Leaney for trailing after us all and Anne-marie van Heelsum & Wendy Jackson for volunteering your services as helpers for the day to enable the event to run smoothly.

Area 1 Show Jumping & style jumping

Peebles and District Riding Club (PDRC) hosted the Area 1 show and style jumping qualifier in Biggar Agriculture Park for the second year running. Valuable lessons having been learned from last year, we were much better organised for the set up and  running of the competition on the day,  and we would like to thank everyone who gave their time and expertise to help us out. This includes all sponsors and stall holders.

PDRC were represented in all the classes. Two of our members, Lyn Millar and Joanna Main, jumped in the novice class as individuals. Although neither of them were placed individually, they were both very happy with their performance. Overall the novice competitors had a slightly more challenging time having to compete in the more uneven arena, which caused a few problems on the day.

The style jumping class was very well contested and PDRC riders Sandra Lamb, Arran Waddell, Sarah Brown and Melanie Grant placed a credible 4th.

The intermediate team again included Sandra Lamb, Sarah Brown and Arran Waddell, with Liz Fletcher as fourth member.  Peebles were well in contention after the first round, however a tricky upright of planks in the second round caught all of us out and we eventually finished in fifth place.

The open teams course looked very problematic with some of the related distances running down hill and the fences seeming massive.  PDRC riders Melanie Grant, Arran Waddell, Anne-marie van Heelsum and Wendy McTeir all rode incredibly well and  going in to the second round the scoring was very tight.  PDRC emerged victorious, winning the competition overall.  Anne-marie won the individual competition, Wendy McTeir coming 4th and Arran Waddell 5th with Melanie Grant 6th. This means that our open team qualify for the championships and Anne-marie also will compete in the individual competition.

Well done to all the competitors.

Indoor Novice Show Jumping

Peebles and District entered two teams in the Novice Indoor Team Show Jumping qualifier held recently at SNEC, where a total of 19 teams competed.

Our “A” team consisted of Melanie Grant, Sarah Brown, Lyn Millar and Arran Waddell. Melanie, on her sister’s coloured horse Lancer, rode a clear first round. Sarah also went clear on her own horse Just in Style. Lyn’s young horse Jack took a bit of stage fright, resulting in a stop down a tricky line of a related distance to a one stride double. Arran rode a lovely clear on her young grey horse Executive Lynne. Overall a great team performance.

Our “B” team were not so fortunate. Annemarie Van Heelsum stepped in to ride Barry Thorpe’s young horse Tango after he dislocated his finger on Saturday. This, combined with Tango being quite uncooperative in the arena, resulted in them being eliminated half way round the course. Justin MacNeil was another late stand-in. Riding Rock Sand, Justin was going well until fence 7, Rocky jumped slightly right and Justin jumped slightly left, resulting in an incredibly graceful dismount! Alas, a fall in SJ means elimination. Our third rider Helen MacNeil’s horse Mackielame was shell shocked at the sight of all the spectators and Helen did very well to nurse her novice horse part way around the track, unfortunately they were also eliminated about half way round. Last to go in this team was Laurie McGowan on The Registrar, Laurie had several fences down but finished her round.

With fences raised and widened for the second round, Melanie was unlucky to have the last fence down, Sarah also had one fence down in the second round. Lyn's horse, still not convinced that the arena was safe, had another babyish stop. Arran's second round also resulted in four faults. After a very long and cold day, Peebles were just out of the placings. Well done to them all for taking part.

Winter Team Dressage

Peebles and District Riding Club put forward two teams for the recent dressage qualifier held at Ingliston Equestrian Centre on the 28th February.  In common with the recent area indoor show jumping, record numbers of clubs competed and competition was fierce.

The warm up tests were held in the indoor arena where riders and horses were sheltered from the weather and other distractions.  In stark contrast, all of the team tests were held in the outdoor arena which is in a very elevated position, and this was much more of a challenge. Consequently, the gusting winds, horizontal rain showers and ongoing building work resulted in some highly entertaining tests!
First out for our first team in the prelim test, was Maria Little and her 17 year old ex-polo pony Worzel.  Worzel coped very well with the outdoor conditions and was 7th overall in his arena. Well done to them! Next, Louise Leaney and Fresco performed a nice accurate prelim test but were not placed individually. The first team’s two novice test riders were Johnston and Lesely Brodie.  Lesely's horse did a lovely test but building work and flapping roof sheeting made him a little tense.

The second team riders also had to cope with dreadful outdoor conditions.  Caz Fox riding Montana and Louise Younger riding Flying Ace were both unplaced.  Novice test riders were Jane Donaldson and Laurie McGowan. Due to judge-writing commitments, I was unable to watch either of their tests. However I know that Laurie’s test was full of highs and lows; she gained several 9s and 8s but sadly also several 1s.   That's horses for you!

Overall neither of our teams were placed but I think they all enjoyed themselves.  I would like to thank them for taking part in this event and hope to see them all again in future events.

Sandra Lamb (Team Captain)

PS  If you have a team numnah can you please return it to any committee member.
